Daikin Industries, Ltd. (DIL) is a Fortune 1000 company headquartered in Osaka, Japan with more than 70,000 employees and is recognized as the largest HVAC manufacturer worldwide. For over 90 years, Daikin has grown consistently and successfully due to the loyalty and success of its customers, as well as a track record of innovation and quality. In late 2012, DIL completed the acquisition of Goodman Global Group, Inc. (Goodman), the leading manufacturer and distributor of residential unitary HVAC in the United States, for $3.7 billion to create Daikin North America LLC (DNA). DNA is the largest manufacturer of HVAC products in North America delivering high technology, environmentally-friendly and energy-intelligent HVAC solutions.
Daikin furthered its commitment to operations in the U.S. with a $417M investment of Daikin Texas Technology Park, a state-of-the-art office, showroom, laboratory, manufacturing and logistics campus located near Houston, TX. As a total solution provider, Daikin offers Engineers, Architects, Contractors and Owners a single source for commercial Packaged RTUs, Chillers, PTACs and Variable Refrigerant Volume (VRV) systems. Some of Daikin’s recent, new product offerings include Daikin Fit and VRV LIFE for residential applications as well as VRV IV-X heat recovery and VRV T-Series water cooled for commercial applications.
Daikin Fit for Residential Applications
The Daikin Fit system represents a radical departure in revolutionizing the future of condensing units in North America, dominated by ducted systems. Daikin Fit melds the best features and performance of ductless-style condensing units with ability to connect to traditional ducted systems and include high-performing inverter compressors with cabinet designs that are smaller, lighter and quieter than traditional unitary outdoor condensing units. Daikin Fit systems are ideal for space-limited installations, requiring only 4” of clearance.
Daikin Fit is controlled by the Daikin One smart thermostat, an easy-to-use, state-of-the-art consumer electronics component and HVAC system controller. With efficiencies up to 18 SEER, Daikin Fit provides a cost-competitive system, in the mid-efficiency category, with clear design and performance advantages over traditional unitary, non-inverter systems. Daikin Fit is powered by a Daikin variable-speed swing inverter compressor that gently ramps up and down, using only the energy needed, thereby saving money during non-peak load periods, compared to traditional, non-inverter systems. Available in 1.5- to 5-ton capacities, the Daikin Fit system is compatible with Daikin’s line of evaporator coils and communicating gas furnaces.
VRV LIFE Systems for Residential Applications
The new Daikin VRV LIFE heat pump system was engineered specifically for residential applications, whether single family homes, townhomes or condominiums, due to its very compact outdoor unit style. VRV LIFE offers an industry first, ducted style furnace and evaporator coil system combination commonly applied in residential applications throughout North America. The VRV LIFE heat pump system also offers several other styles of both ductless and ducted indoor models providing the ultimate system for application and design flexibility. Up to 9 indoor units can be connected to a single outdoor VRV heat pump to heat or cool, with high heating capacities well below 0°F (-18°C).
Daikin VRV LIFE systems use inverter driven VRV technology to solve some of the age-old residential HVAC challenges. Traditional HVAC systems use single speed or dual speed compressors, while VRV LIFE systems are equipped with revolutionary Daikin variable speed inverter technology. VRV LIFE systems can be configured as a heat pump or a dual fuel system using a gas furnace. As an all-electric heat pump, VRV LIFE provides efficient cooling and heating during extreme ambient temperatures from -4°F to 122°F. VRV LIFE systems can also be paired with a gas furnace to provide a reliable source of heat during colder months or for optimizing operational cost. The small footprint and side discharge design requires less space and is quieter than traditional air conditioning systems.
VRV IV-X Heat Recovery Systems for Commercial Applications
Daikin’s new VRV IV X heat recovery systems adapt Daikin’s industry-leading VRV technology to the unique North American HVAC market. VRV IV X is the industry’s first VRV/VRF system to be engineered and assembled in North America. VRV IV X systems are VRF industry’s first dual fuel, 3-phase, VRV/VRF systems. The ability to integrate VRV IV X systems with Dakin communicating gas furnaces provides a choice of heat pump or gas heating. VRV IV X heat recovery systems are engineered with features that provide ease of configurability and optimal total life cycle cost for multi-phased installations and buildings with changing applications. VRV IV X heat recovery systems integrate Daikin’s patented vapor injection technology and advanced Variable Refrigerant Temperature (VRT) technology to deliver year round comfort control, energy efficiency and reliable operations. VRV IV X provides high heat pump heating capacities down to -13°F as standard with a wide heat pump heating operation range from -13°F to 60°F and a wide cooling operation range from -4°F to 122°F.
VRV T-Series Water Cooled Systems for Commercial Applications
Daikin’s new VRV T-Series water cooled system is engineered for buildings with existing cooling tower water loops or connection to ground source geothermal loops, which can make it one of the most energy efficient systems available at up to 30 IEER. The VRV T-Series provides all the attributes of an air-cooled VRV system, including the added flexibility for cold climate applications, as well as low sound levels, advanced comfort control and zoning, all in a small package.
VRV T-Series systems are available in either heat recovery, providing simultaneous heating and cooling, or as a heat pump system, providing either heating or cooling, but not simultaneously. Up to 64 indoor units can be connected to a single condensing unit and the VRV T-Series uses the same refrigerent piping as the VRV IV-X air cooled systems, which make it convenient for combining water cooled and air cooled systems on the same project.
