Turning energy into an opportunity for business advantage

Energy is changing. As new energy sources, insights and technologies emerge, energy is becoming more than a commodity, and generation is no longer primarily centralized — coming from a power station, for example. Businesses are starting to use energy in new ways too. They’re taking control, gaining competitive advantages, increasing their resilience, improving operating efficiency and unlocking new sources of value.

At Direct Energy Business, we understand this changing landscape and know that our role as an energy supplier must evolve with it. To us, this means continuing to offer smarter ways for our customers to procure their electricity and natural gas supply from the energy marketplace.

These procurement strategies include solutions like our Block and Index power solution, which allows customers to lock in a portion of their electricity load at a fixed price while purchasing the remainder at market prices. We also offer our innovative PowerPortfolio® and GasPortfolio® solutions that deliver investment-style management of energy portfolios.

This energy revolution, however, also means that we must be ready to meet the needs of our customers in the world of distributed energy, which means energy generated outside of centralized locations — often onsite at a facility.  This is where new energy sources are appearing, from wind and solar to generation from combined heat and power (CHP), which converts gas into both electricity and heat in a single process. These changes put power in the hands of consumers and turn energy into a critical source of business advantage.

Technology is transforming business

In partnership with our sister company, Centrica Business Solutions, we have been at the forefront of the new thinking, new technologies and new ways of working that will help our customers take control of their energy and grow their business.

Our energy intelligence, services and distributed energy solutions already power the ambitions of 1,500 energy users around the world. From retail and manufacturing to health and education, we are helping our customers transform the ways they buy and use energy.

Turning energy into an opportunity

With advances in technology, the energy market has evolved. Many power stations of old are being replaced by smaller power sources. These distributed energy solutions are more affordable and efficient, and secure power at the point of use. Renewables like combined heat and power and solar feed into the grid, and energy can be stored locally and consumed when it’s needed.

Making solar part of your strategy

Solar power enables you to generate your own electricity by converting the energy in sunlight into electricity. It can be used directly on site, stored in a battery system for later use or, in some areas, fed into the grid to create an additional revenue stream. It is 100% sustainable, reliable and cost-effective – and ideal for businesses that want to reduce both energy costs and carbon emissions.

To optimize our customers’ return on investment, every solar installation is customized to the individual business. From the moment businesses 'power up' they know how much energy their system produced, allowing them to forecast energy use and operating expenses more effectively.

Making solar an affordable solution

By generating a high proportion of their own electricity every day, businesses can reduce the need for costlier grid energy. But the benefits don’t end there. Businesses can combine solar technology with a battery storage system to keep any excess electricity generated in reserve.

This stored energy can be used to power facilities during peak cost electricity periods, or transferred back to the grid in some areas to create an additional revenue stream.

With a choice of flexible financing options, and numerous federal, state and local incentives available, using solar to power businesses can be very affordable. Although it can be quite complex to understand, our experts will guide you through all aspects of the solar technology and help navigate the markets, incentives and regulations on your behalf. Then, from the moment you start generating your own electricity, you will find it offers an immediate return on investment.

Exploring Combined Heat and Power (CHP)

Another key distributed energy source is offered by Combined Heat and Power (CHP) --alternatively known as cogeneration. CHP is a well-established technology, but one that is constantly evolving to keep it amongst the best energy-saving solutions available. It works by converting a natural gas into both electricity and heat in a single process.

CHP is most often installed onsite at a customer’s facility where it becomes one of the most efficient sources of energy production – improving the resilience of your onsite supply, reducing your costs and helping you meet your CO2 emissions targets.

Businesses can’t operate without power, and CHP can provide a reliable energy supply that can keep businesses running, regardless of what’s happening outside the gates. It can also help keep energy levels constant – providing a steady and stable supply to keep businesses operating smoothly.

Reduced operating costs

Our vision is to help businesses turn energy from a cost and potential business risk into a source of sustainable competitive advantage. We work with businesses from the beginning, finding the best energy solution for each site. We view CHP as part of a total solution to maximize energy savings and efficiency – and even help generate revenue from a facility’s own energy usage.

Energy innovation in action

We remain at the forefront of changing how the world uses energy, how it impacts the energy market and what it means for your business. No one knows energy better than we do, so you have the reassurance of our extensive industry experience, knowledge and a world-class operation.

Wherever your organization and whatever its energy needs, we can help power your business performance, support resilience and uncover new sources of revenue. From energy insights to power generation, curtailing consumption and energy efficiency, distributed energy solutions can be used to optimize any procurement strategy for electricity and natural gas. With our already years-long partnership in place, Centrica Business Solutions and Direct Energy Business can seamlessly integrate your supply and your demand.

South Fork Peak Savers is a program helping businesses and residents on the South Fork of Long Island reduce energy consumption, save money and preserve our environment. This program is offered by Applied Energy Group, Inc., a local consulting company with over 30 years of experience in the energy industry. Every kilowatt counts! Whether you’re a business owner, a local resident or a second homeowner, you can make a difference. The South Fork’s energy consumption is growing at twice the rate of the rest of Long Island, and the peak load is projected to continue to increase most notably in July and August when air conditioning, pool pumps and electronic devices are all in high demand. Becoming a Peak Saver helps lower energy use at the most critical (PEAK) times – and can bring down your energy bill! When you make small changes, they can lead to big savings.  South Fork Peak Savers is under contract to PSEG Long Island to provide these services in the towns of East Hampton and Southampton.
